Construction Update - March 27, 2013

Joplin High School / Franklin Technology Center: 501,000 square feet

On Wednesday, March 20, at 7:16 am, the first piece of structural steel was raised at the Joplin High School / Franklin Technology Center site marking a milestone in the school's construction. Work continues on concrete piers and foundations. You might also notice that the big water retention pond has been filled and the even bigger hill of dirt is gone. Work on a retaining wall at 24th and Indiana Ave. is also underway. The new school will tentatively open in August 2014.

                                                                                                                                          Irving Elementary:
85,000 square feet

All concrete slabs are in place, and the structural steel work is nearing completion. Masonry walls are 80% complete. Work on the roof begins any day. Irving Elementary will open in December 2013. It will house both Irving and Emerson Elementary students.




East Middle School and Soaring Heights Elementary (newly named): 215,073 square feet

All concrete slabs are in place. The structural steel in the middle school area is nearing completion and exterior walls are going up. The structural steel for the elementary school will arrive on site any day. These schools will also open in December 2013.



Community Safe Rooms:
The safe room designs for Junge Stadium, Cecil Floyd Elementary, McKinley Elementary, Stapleton Elementary, and Eastmorland Elementary are complete and have been submitted to SEMA and FEMA for approval. The safe rooms at most schools will serve as gymnasiums. Construction on these safe rooms is expected to begin within the next few months. Design work is underway for the remaining safe room projects including Royal Heights Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, Columbia Elementary, West Central Elementary, Kelsey Norman Elementary, Emerson Elementary, Duquesne Elementary, and Duenweg Elementary.

Take care of school family and start school on time on August 17, 2011 - accomplished!


Mission two:
Return students to permanent facilities by August 2014
  • New Irving Elementary School - tentatively set to open Dec. 2013
  • New East Middle School - tentatively set to open Dec. 2013
  • New elementary at East (yet to be named) - tentatively set to open Dec. 2013
  • New Joplin High School / Franklin Technology Center - tentatively set to open Aug. 2014

Mission three:
Do our part to protect our community, create equity, and fill community needs
  • Complete student / community safe rooms throughout the district
  • Complete upgrades to existing elementary schools
