Joplin Schools Redistricting Information
Updated: Mar. 26, 2013

For the past several weeks, school administrators, school staff, and parent representatives from each elementary and middle school in the district have been working on the challenging task of analyzing our current school attendance zones and addressing needed changes to these zones. On Tuesday, March 26, the Joplin Schools Board of Education approved the Redistricting Plan this committee developed. Below is information regarding the Redistricting Plan.

Why is redistricting necessary?
Redistricting is necessary due to shifts in population caused by the May 2011 tornado and due to the construction of two new elementary schools to replace four schools, two of which were destroyed in the disaster.

When does redistricting take effect?
The redistricting plan will go into effect for the 2013 / 2014 school year.

Priorities set by Joplin Schools for redistricting:
  • Affect as few students as possible (around 205 elementary students district-wide - out of 3,660 total elementary students -  will be redistricted to a different elementary school).
  • Create a better balance of enrollment at our schools (the plan addresses overcrowding at several schools).
  • Leave room for growth in storm-affected areas.
  • Allow for grandfathering (gives parents options such as keeping their child at their current school or with siblings) - click here for more detailed information on grandfathering.
Redistricting Committee priorities:
  • Keep neighborhoods together.
  • Keep elementary feeder schools whole.
  • Balance middle school numbers.
  • Keep close proximity from home to schools.
  • Balance free and reduced lunch percentages (first four priorities considered first).
